Acceptance is a major theme in Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling. Often you will find that growing up can be painful and awkward, and need to grow into their personalities and learn to love themselves. If the duckling had accepted himself the way he was, despite what other animals may have said, would he have been happy?
The transition from sadness and awkwardness to grace and maturity definitely nails “The Ugly Duckling” as a coming-of-age story.
After seeing the video students and I had a long discussion. There have been many individuals who have felt like they did not belong.
Students were made to think of instances in their life where they felt like the Ugly Duckling? How did they cope?
They had a many instances to share.
Every kid who feels a little of out place should think of the story of the ugly duckling and know that when he or she grows up, that uniqueness will be valued.
It was followed by a REFLECTION exercise of GLASS-HAZE-FROST
It is a great learning for me as a facilitator as the story emphasizes the fact that all individuals need to be accepted the way they are and merely needed to be seen from the right perspective. J
