There were 500 coins hidden in different places in the class. Students
were arranged in groups and given out paper cups and markers which had labels
from 1 to 3. They had to search for a non-renewable source of energy symbolized
by coins hidden throughout the classroom. Each group was given three 30-second
opportunities to find coins. After each search they counted, recorded and deposited
coins into a cup (one labelled for each search). At the end of their three
searches, they analyzed the data. Through their findings, the students were able
to deduce that due to a limited supply to begin with, the search yielded
smaller returns each time.
